ALLEGED people smuggler Mehmet Seriban today appeared briefly in Darwin Magistrates Court.

The former Sydney kebab shop owner faces 11 charges of breaching immigration laws, including 10 counts for bringing unlawful non-citizens into Australia and one count of organising an illegal boat arrival.

The former Turkish asylum seeker is alleged to have organised a people smuggling boat which arrived on Ashmore Reef on February 17, 2000, with 14 Turkish nationals abroad.

Seriban did not apply for bail and was not required to enter a plea.

The case has been set down for a hand-up committal hearing on December 1.
