THE first man extradited to Australia to face people smuggling charges has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment.

Iraqi national Ali Hassan Abdolamir Al Jenabi, 33, pleaded guilty to two charges of bringing more than 250 people to Australia in between 2000 and 2001.

Northern Territory Supreme Court Justice Dean Mildren today said Al Jenabi was not primarily motivated by money, but by bringing his family to Australia.

He said Al Jenabi was heavily involved in the people smuggling operation, bringing asylum seekers to Australia on wooden fishing vessels.

He sentenced Al Jenabi to six years and three months jail on one charge, and eight years on the other, to be served concurrently.

He set a non-parole period of four years, backdated to when Al Jenabi was arrested in Thailand in June 2002.

The maximum penalty was 20 years in jail.
