An alleged people smuggler has been committed to stand trial on charges arising from the ill-fated voyage of the Indonesian fishing boat Siev X in 2001.

Khaleed Daoed, 36, is accused of helping to organise the voyage in which the boat capsized en route from Indonesia to Christmas Island with the loss of more than 350 lives.

The hearing in the Brisbane Magistrates Court heard stories of overcrowding and terror from some of the 45 survivors.

Magistrate Barbara Tynan ordered Daoed to face trial in the Supreme Court on 10 charges of aiding the entry of others during this and an earlier voyage.

Daoed was not required to enter a plea and was remanded in custody.
