'I hope for a fair trial'

Despairing Khaleed Daoed taken by police to Australia.

SANDVIKEN
Now the Sandviken resident Khaleed Daoed has been transported to Australia. There he is hotly sought after, but the media is probably not allowed to interview the suspected people smuggler. The Arbetarbladet did some days before the extradition was carried out and it was a heartbroken man we met.

When the 35 year old Khaleed Daoed arrives in Australia, it will be the first time he set foot in the country.

'I will be totally alone in a country where I know nobody', he said crying, when we met him where he remained in custody in Gävle.

Earlier in the week he was collected by Australian police and put on a flight from Sweden - the country where he has residency - to Australia, the country where he now shall answer the charges that he caused 353 refugee's deaths.

What worried him then was that he knows nothing of what will happen. He has the whole time declared himself innocent and says that he was on site only to help other refugees.

'I know that Australia is a democratic land. The only thing I can hope for is that it will be a fair trial'

Acquitted once
During the interview, Doaed repeats again and again that he already once in Indonesia was acquitted from suspicion that he was involved with the incident and that he is worried for his family.

'I am not the guilty one. The real criminal has not been extradited to Australia, he is on trial in Egypt today. [He] is surrounded by relatives and friends in his homeland, while I may never again see my family who are in Jordan. It feels so unfair. I hope that he is judged and sentenced heavily.'

Drops the case completely
Now that Khaleed Daoed is extradited, the Swedish authorities will completely drop the case with the suspected people smuggler from Sandviken.

Now the Australian courts take over and Daoed risks 20 years in prison. The authorities' ambition to get to people smugglers has become a big political question and the accusations against the Sandviken resident are big news in Australia.

'It's probable no journalist will get to meet him, unfortunately the authorities will see to that', said Marg Hutton, editor of a special website on the boat catastrophe and one of those in Australia who is acquainted with the problem of illegal refugee trade.

She at the same time tells of another suspected people smuggler. 'He has been locked up for two years awaiting trail and the media cannot talk to him. I am afraid that this will also happen to Daoed', she said.
