A PAKISTANI national charged with smuggling almost 400 boat people to Australia in 2001 has made brief appearance in a Perth court today.

Hasan Ayoub, 33, was remanded in custody until October 24 at Perth magistrates court, in relation to the alleged offences between March and April 2001.

He is now facing 12 charges, after commonwealth prosecutors withdrew one of the people-smuggling allegations today.

He was extradited from Thailand last month, the second accused people smuggler to be brought to Australia from Thailand this year.

Ayoub, who is also known as Naem Ahmed Chaudry, told the court at an earlier hearing he would not be cooperating with any attempts to interview him, or be making any statements to investigating officers.
