A Darwin court has heard Federal Police tapped telephones belonging to the family of the first man to be extradited to Australia on people smuggling charges.

An Australian Federal Police officer was cross-examined today about the way they had performed Ali Hassan Al Jenabi's extradition from Thailand.

In the Darwin Magistrates Court, Federal Agent Desmond Killmier said the People Smuggling Strike Team, a joint police and immigration task force, had been tracking Mr Al Jenabi for more than a year.

He said investigations had included placing phone taps on two of Mr Al Jenabi's relatives in Sydney and that several conversations from Thailand were recorded.

The AFP officer said the investigation also included intelligence from an informant who was now living in Australia.

Agent Killmier said he was one of two officers to escort Mr Al Jenabi back to Australia in January this year.
