A MAN who allegedly smuggled more than 350 people to Australia faced the Darwin Magistrates Court today, with further hearings being set for August.

Ali Hassan Abdolamir Al Jenabi, 32, is the first person successfully extradited to Australia on people smuggling charges.

Magistrate Alastair McGregor today confirmed a preliminary hearing into the allegations had been set down for August.

No application for bail was made during the brief appearance.

The Iraqi national, extradited from Thailand in February, is accused of smuggling more than 350 people to Ashmore Reef, north-west of the Australian mainland, in four illegal boats in 2000 and 2001.
