People smuggling hearing planned in Australia

About 70 witnesses will be called to give evidence at the committal hearing of the first person to be extradited to Australia on people smuggling charges.

Our reporter Melinda James says Iraqi national Ali Hassan Abdolamir Al Jenabi, 32, is accused of smuggling about 350 people from Indonesia to Australia during 2000 and 2001.

Mr Al Jenabi was extradited from Thailand late last year, and has been in custody in the north Australian city of Darwin since February.

About 100 witnesses had been listed to appear at the committal, which has been set down for three weeks in August, but recent negotiations have reduced the number down to 70.

Mr Al Jenabi is facing 22 charges, four of which carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
