A former Tasmanian who has denied reports that he is associated with Indonesia- Australia people smuggling said yesterday that he proposed to "keep a low profile" until his status with Indonesian authorities was clarified.

Speaking from his home in Surabaya, Indonesia, Kevin "Johnny" Enniss also distanced himself from reports that not only has he been employed by Surabaya police to stop the people smugglers but also that he was soon to be deported.

"It's loose language to say that, I'm not employed by the police, I have worked with them at top levels and assisted them with the flow of information but never been paid by them," said Mr Enniss, who spent his early years in Launceston and was educated at a Devonport Catholic school.

"I have also heard nothing about being deported."

Mr Enniss said he left Tasmania in 1966, furthering his education in Darwin before working in Arnhem Land and then moving to Indonesia.

Mr Enniss said that he intended to "keep a low profile" until he could discover the source of the news reports that said that another Australian, Paul McCarthy, had also been deported.

"There have been reports all over the place about this (people smuggling and deportation) now, in Tasmania, Queensland, NSW, but I'm saying nothing and keeping quiet until it's blown over, mate," he said.

Mr Enniss said that in the meantime he would be concentrating on local business activities involving "a major Australian company".

An Australian Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said yesterday that it was still probing the claims against Mr Enniss.
