Amal Basry Remembered

I recall meeting Amal at the opening of the Memorial Exhibition for SIEV X in Sydney in October 2004 and like everyone else on that day I remember her heartfelt speech to the gathering of supporters and the love that was so obvious she shared with fellow SIEV X survivors on that occasion. It is always remarkable to hear of survivors of horrific tragedies but it is even more remarkable and impressive to meet survivors of traumatic experiences who will themselves to speak again and again of the awful experiences that they have endured. Amal was one such person. The tragedy of SIEV X is a story that haunts so many loving and compassionate Australians and we are all grateful to Amal for sharing her story with us.

It is so important to ensure that we hear first hand when we can of such tragedies so that we can all be inspired by people like Amal to do all that we can to ensure that others know of the tragedy of SIEV X and that our government is continually questioned about its role and knowledge of this tragedy.

Thank you Amal for sharing your experiences with us. We are all made stronger by your commitment, love and passion.

Thank you and my heartfelt condolence to your family, friends and supporters. We will always remember you.
