Amal Basry, 52, survivor of the SIEV X tragedy 2001 lived long enough to share her story, some listened, we became close. She escaped from Iraq and was shipwrecked in an overloaded Indonesian boat. Amal was one of about 40 who survived, 353 others drowned. Amal's son received a visa on the date of her death. Amal, what happened to you was unforgivable but for us you remain lovely and unforgettable.

BASRY, Amal. When Amal lost her fight with cancer on Saturday afternoon a courageous lady passed away. We were fortunate to hear Amal hold a large audience of secondary students enthralled with her story of survival. She was warm hearted and generous despite the tragedies she'd experienced in her life.

Our sympathy goes out to Amal's family and close friends.

Isabel and Frank De La Rambelya.
