A 37-year-old former Iraqi goldsmith has been jailed for nine years for his role in helping organise a people smuggling operation in which 353 people drowned.

Last month, Khaleed Daoed was found guilty by a Supreme Court jury in Brisbane for aiding in the ill-fated Siev X boat disaster, where hundreds of refugees drowned en route from Indonesia to Australia in October 2001.

Justice Phil McMurdo set a non-parole period of four-and-a-half years.

Daoed has already served two years in prison, which means he is eligible for release in around two-and-a-half years.
