And then there's SIEV-X. There is no justification of any sort for Hill telling Gates he can't appear. Gates is the new chief of navy. As task force chief he reviewed all the intelligence on SIEV-X. His evidence is vital. He made public comment on the matter recently. Why not suggest a Senate order for him to appear? And why not recall Admiral Geoffrey Smith, just retired, to explain himself? After all, the head of the Prime Minister's task force, Jane Halton, who mentioned SIEV-X in passing in her evidence, was recalled for a detailed look at the matter when it became important. Smith mentioned SIEV-X in passing in his evidence, then got blown out of the water by Admiral Bonser - surely he's got questions to answer?

ALISON BROINOWSKI'S article (Opinion, 26/8) shows the effect of the leadership this Government provides. When a Government ignores the plight of an overloaded and overdue boat and 350 people die in an area patrolled by Operation Relex - then its border protection policy has been spectacularly successful. No further refugee departures and not a vote lost.

The man alleged to be behind the disastrous Siev X vessel, which foundered off the Java coastline drowning 353 asylum-seekers, Abu Quassey, is also being sought by Australian police.
Senator Ellison said three warrants were out for his arrest in relation to people-smuggling offences.
Mr Quassey is in the custody of Indonesian police and is being tried in Indonesia for immigration offences.
"We are liaising with Indonesian authorities in relation to Mr Abu Quassey and we have received great co-operation from Indonesian authorities," Senator Ellison said.
