Survivor says ships just sailed by ~ Steve Dow (Age)
- An Iraqi woman who survived the sinking of the SIEV-X that killed 353 asylum seekers off the Java Coast says that three large ships drew close to the scene but failed to mount a rescue.
Amal Hassan, 48, who with her son Rami, 18, was among 44 survivors of the tragedy last October, claims some of the drownings could have been averted had the ships stayed. She survived 20 hours in the water clinging to a dead body. She now lives in Melbourne on a temporary protection visa...

...I find it rather offensive that you dump on [Margo Kingston] for pursuing the matter of the SIEV X. After all, that was the death of hundreds of people. Cheryl and Gareth hardly matter by comparison. Does Kingston have less evidence on SIEV X than you had for Cheryl and Gareth?! If the opinions of senior journos rate as evidence these days, I could tell you about the long chat I had with a senior Canberra press gallery member who is absolutely convinced that the government chose to turn a blind eye while hundreds of people died a terrible death. In fact, I'd say that's a damn sight more important than who shagged whom in the house on the hill...
