How many of the 1500 asylum seeker lives lost at sea since 2001 could have been saved?
Zahra (6), Fatima (7) and Eman (9) - the daughters of Sondos Ismail and Ahmed Alzalimi -  three of the 146 children who lost their lives when the vessel that has become known as SIEVX foundered in international waters en route to Christmas Island on 19 October 2001.

Organiser of doomed boat faces extradition ~ Margo Kingston (SMH)

  • The Australian Federal Police wants to charge the organiser of the fatal trip by asylum seekers on the SIEV-X with causing the deaths of 353 people on board, and to hold the trial in Australia under Australian law. AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty told the Senate SIEV-X inquiry that police would have to establish the vessel sank in international waters on its way to Christmas Island for Australian law to apply, and to permit the extradition of Abu Qussey from Indonesia, where he is in custody for minor offences...
